BIO

The 2022-23 season will see Tjaden performing Adele for Opera Mississippi’s production of Die Fledermaus, as well as Yvette for Mobile Opera’s production of La Rondine, a Covid postponement seeing it’s return to the schedule. She has already competed as a semi-finalist in the 2022 Vincerò Voice Competition, after having won special mention in the Medici International Competition. She also toured the East Coast with Ascend Classical and their production of Vincerò! A night of Italian Opera, for which she was nominated for best performer by Broadway World.

Tjaden was delighted to sing her first Frasquita in Mobile Opera’s 2021 production of Carmen, for which she also choreographed, as well as performed Elisetta from Il Matrimonio Segreto, also with Mobile Opera. The summer of 2021 saw Tjaden performing as lead aerialist in Seward Studio’s production of Wonder. In addition to lead performer and aerial captain for Wonder, she was also aerial choreographer. Natchez Festival utilized both her skills for their 2021 gala tour, String of Pearls, in which Tjaden sang while performing aerial acrobatics. It was so well received by audiences, they had her return for the 2022 performance of The Magic of Opera. Mobile Opera was thrilled to have Tjaden perform Aerial&Arias in 2020, a concert in which she sang a variety of opera and musical theatre, incorporating aerial acrobatics. Also incorporating her aerial performance was the 2018 production of Ragtime, in which she sang Evelyn Nesbit (appropriately nicknamed “girl on a swing”) from the silks for Joe Jefferson Playhouse.

Also with Mobile Opera, Tjaden sang the title role for the 2019 production of Il Segreto di Susanna, as well as portraying Flora in La Traviata. Mobile Opera’s 2016-2017 season saw her perform Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica, and Nella in Gianni Schicci. Also from Gianni Schicchi, Tjaden covered Rinucia in a gender-swap production with Moon River Opera in 2020.

While with a few young artist programs, she was given the opportunity to cover Nannetta from Falstaff with Emerald City Opera, as well as Norina from Don Pasquale and Yum-Yum from The Mikado with Mobile Opera. Summer 2012 saw her as a young artist for the I Sing Beijing festival, in Beijing, China.

While completing her undergraduate degree at James Madison University, she received several 1st place finishes in the Midatlantic Region, State of Virginia auditions, and a first place finish in the Southeastern Region, State of Alabama auditions. She was a 2nd place finalist in the Vann Vocal Institute competition in 2013.

Amidst performing, she also pursued training and high level certification in aerial instruction, yoga, and fitness instruction. She is RYT200 hour certified in yoga, and is Level 2 American Circus Educator certified through Aerial Physique. From 2013-2021, she owned and operated an aerial studio, where she trained other aerial performers as well as helped her clients pursue their fitness and personal empowerment goals.

Tjaden was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and grew up in Mobile, Alabama from the age of four. She is now based in Richmond, Virginia.

"Tjaden O'Dowd Cox is the singer every opera company should have on the roster.  She brings talent, charm, versatility, dependability, and a tremendous stage presence to every role.  Mobile Opera has benefitted greatly from her many appearances on our stage.  It is always a pleasure to hear her and to work with someone so congenial, professional, and effective.  I look for every opportunity to include her in casting."
